Sweet Root Village are the pop-up markets that ran in September and October. Creative, friendly young people, beautiful flowers, and a philosophy that was so unlike what the country was living through made the pop-up magical. As an added bonus, shopping was helping others: Sweet Root Village donated food and money to Fairfax-based “Food for Others,” to help people who had lost jobs and savings during the pandemic. Senior Services of Alexandria’s Groceries to Go program seamlessly fulfills a crucial need that many seniors have. In partnership with Giant Food, screened volunteers shop and then deliver groceries to their “assigned” seniors every other week. Groceries are ordered based on the senior’s personal shopping list. There are no delivery fees and no minimum orders. The only requirement is that the seniors must be over 60 years old and live in the city of Alexandria.
